 What do pushrods do? - Pushrods connect the lifters to the rocker, pushing the rocker up and thus opening the valve when the lobe of the cam crosses the appropriate lifter.
Why do these need to be replaced? - Generally they don't unless you're running a cam or a high ratio roller rocker. The stock units are brittle under these circumstances and will bend, typically rendering the car undriveable until the fix is made.
Are these hard to install? - No. Pushrods will take an extra 5 minutes to install when doing a rocker job.
